Un informe del Instituto Internacional de Estudios para la Paz de Estocolmo (SIPRI por sus siglas en inglés) señala que a inicios del 2017 nueve países –Estados Unidos, Rusia, Reino Unido, Francia, China, India, Pakistán, Israel y Corea del Norte– poseían aproximadamente 14,935 armas nucleares, de las cuales 4,150 estaban desplegadas con fuerzas operativas, mientras que alrededor de 1,800 de estas armas se mantienen en estado de alerta operativa alta.
De acuerdo con SIPRI, Estados Unidos y Rusia concentran el 92% del total de las armas nucleares.
Los demás Estados con armas nucleares tienen arsenales bastante más reducidos, pero todos ellos desarrollan o despliegan nuevos sistemas de armas o han anunciado su intención de hacerlo. Se cree que China, Corea del Norte, India y Pakistán están ampliando la dimensión de sus arsenales nucleares.
Corea del Norte sigue priorizando su programa nuclear militar como eje de su estrategia de seguridad y ha realizado su cuarta y quinta detonación nuclear en el 2016.
Los ensayos elevaron hasta 2,057 la cifra de explosiones nucleares registradas desde 1945.
